Back Home

Hey how's everybody been? I'm finally back home after a pretty successful Arizona Fall League. It was a great opportunity to get my inning count up as well as meet some players from other organizations. It will be nice to get some time off and enjoy the holidays with my family which I always look forward to. Now that I have a bunch of free time to go through everything i've accumulated this season I will set some things aside to give away in contests. Let me know what you guys would like to see. But let's try and be realistic. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. See you soon!

    It was fun to watch you in the Fall league. It was great to see you up close and watch the hitters shake their heads at that filthy curveball.
    A new playlist would be awesome. And as far as items for contests, maybe a Javelinas hat or something from the AFL.

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving too and are enjoying the time with your family.
It was fun following your starts in Arizona...even though all we have is Gameday.

So, what do you think? Penn State / USC in the Rose Bowl?? Should be good.
I know you're a USC guy, but I have to root for Penn State this year...sorry ;-)

Phil! Great to hear from you again :) Congrats on your success this fall! You're gonna have a great season for the Yanks in '09.. I believe in you!! Contest wise, maybe autographs or a chance to meet you (that'd be awesome! I swear I'm not a creeper haha). Even tickets to a spring training game would be sweet. Also.. I have an artist that you need to check out. He's not anything close to what you listen to, but he's amazing - Harry Connick, Jr. I just saw him in concert this past weekend, he's truly incredible. He's jazz - I know what you're thinking.. yeah right. You just have to aquire a taste for him. I started listening to him last year and now I can't stop! If you need something different for holiday tunes, he's your man.

Get back on here soon Phil!!

Hey Phil, it's so great to hear from you! As far as prizes for your contests, I think signed gear from yourself and your teammates are fantastic. I think we're all pretty grateful that you want to give us anything at all!

Also, I was wondering if you were going to bring back "The Photo of the Day". I always enjoy seeing your photos of the places you've visited. Anyways, congrats on your AFL season and enjoy your time off.

well, its about time you started posting again. really hope you get the 5th spot in the rotation next year. im one of the few who hasnt given up on you dude. as for contest, lets see some more office trivia stuff working. as for prizes? how about game used baseballs, hats, broken bats ( im sure your could ask johnny damon) or anything else. they sell dirt now, so anything you give away is a collectible. cant wait to see some contests. have a good holiday dude

Hey Phil great job in the AFL. I was fortunate enough to see several times in the fall league here in AZ. Looked great, hope you can keep up the great work for next season. anything you feel to put in for prizes is fine, maybe some autographed stuff(hats, balls, cards, etc.) As for the playlist, I would like to see Re-Education by Rise Against. This song is on the new Guitar Hero World Tour, which I'm sure you already have and know :) Enjoy some down time and Happy Holidays.

This Blog can't be real... No way are these real Yankee fans .. How can you all just sit back and lay this pile of sweetness on this guy??... Did you all forget we could of traded him to the Twins and only had the best pitcher on the planet in Pinstripes instead of our cross town rivals??... And the differnece for making the playoffs was only the 16 games Johan won? Rules of the Yard keep it clean be civil and make a point... I want to know how Phil Hughes can tell us Yankee fans that keeping him was in the best interest of the fans and its paying consumers like me?.. I only spend about 20,000 a year for my box seats and got no playoffs because our brain trusts thought he was to valuable to trade away.. So, what can we expect in 2009 Phil?.. another plague of injuries? This time you slam the car door on your hand? or trip and fall because you can't chew gum and walk at the same time??.. What does 20,000 get me?.. He got me no post season in 2008...

I been a fan probable longer than your age!!,,, Second, if my memory serves me correctly, I live in the USA..where my opinion and thoughts weather you and the rest in here think might be rude but is allowed. I along like you are asking a question to Phil Hughes.. At least my intentions as a true fan is to know if he has the makeup and composure to pitch on the biggest and best stage in the world?. Its about winning not about can you give away some silly gift where you will sell it on EBAY... I want to know what he is doing to prevent these injuries again?.. He is working hard to condition himself for the upcoming season. The Yankees and their fans have but allot of stock in him and Ian Kennedy and is this hype or the real deal? Not about how well he pitched in the AFL.. And lets not forget he got was getting crushed in the beginning of the AFL too.. But I am so sure you knew that because your just a big fan!!...So, are you missing something here.. YEAH Captain Obvious you are.. A true fan wants to win!!!..A true fan will ask the tough questions because he cares... So is winning important or is it some baseball signed by Phil more important?..   Phil is a great guy who is very down to earth and loyal to his fans. We are happy that he had a good AFL and are optimistic for his return next season. I don't know what you mean by "real Yankee fans", but the last time I checked trading away young talent for superstars has not worked over the last eight seasons. Trading for Santana was too expensive, and clearly didn't fit into the teams plans. They are obviously trying to go younger and cheap in order to build more complete baseball teams, and if they want Santana that bad he is a free agent. I would rather have the organization spend money then spend talent. Phil thank you for your blog and all of your hard work. Happy Holidays to you and your family. Don't listen to the nay sayers and the fans who want to throw around talent and follow the current trend of losing and expending young talen.

  do you think someone might like you if you brag about the money you spend on yankee tickets? you cannot possibly sit there and think that if johan was playing in the AL east that he would have still had 16 wins, even with his 16 wins look at how far the mets ended up making it in the playoffs, i hope you think that's $20,000 worth. You're trying to tell us we need to buy older, more experienced players, yet then you are trying to make a joke of Phil's injuries. Would you make an offer to someone like Burnett then?

If your asking me do I have the right to say the things I did because i spent this amount on my season tickets??.. Well, like any consumer if you buy a product your not happy with you have the right to express your unhappiness.. But perhaps 20k isn't allot of money to you and you probable have luxury box seats to boast about and if so GREAT for you!!. But, I am about winning not about some signed autograph you hope to win in a contest!!.. And to answer your questions ... Johan would have won more games in Pinstripes.. If the Mets had a decent bullpen he would have won the CY Young award (16 wins plus 8 blown saves equals 24 wins) but I am sure you knew that because you follow the careers of baseball players so closely. And Johan was 29 when the Mets got him.. But I am sure 29 is old by your standard. As far as Aj is concerned.. another injury prone player.. I wouldn't give him a minor league contract let alone 80 million dollars..NYY are about tradition and winning.. but perhaps you just became a fan in the 1990's and probable still think jeter is cute... You don't win in the AL east with players who can't handle the pressure of playing in NY. Real fans care about winning that;s what makes the Yankee's great and its fans.   You can't pinpoint the Yankees' failures on one player. If it takes an entire team to win, then the entire team has to be held accountable when they lose. The best thing we can do as Yankees fans is forget about '08 (except for the fact that the Red Sox lost in Game 7 of the ALCS:) and look ahead to Pitchers & Catchers reporting in a few months and opening up the new Stadium in April!! We have plenty to look forward to, so let's stay positive about it! Okay so that's my "after school" public address announcement for the day. Have a good one everybody!

  A player without a no trade clause has no control whether he is traded or not. Yes, 2008 was a disappointing year. My approach from the beginning of winter ball and on through this off season is to work as hard as I can to have a great 2009. Hope that answers all of your questions or concerns.

    I am not concerned about what gift I can win. I enjoy looking at Phil's blog because it is nice to see an athlete connect with his fans. I do care about the Yankees winning and I am sick of watching them trade away young talent to secure superstars. IT DOES NOT WORK. It has not worked for the last ten years and the organization is finally deciding to invest more in young talent.

    seems the only thing you are concerned about is what you want and that is winning. this is a place where people can interact with their favorite players about their performance and their ACTUAL lives outside the playing field. don't go around bashing people because they are interested in players lives. professional athletes are people too and not just to satisfy what you want and spend 20,000 dollars on. if you would like to find out what is actually going on in the yankees' organization then try and get job at their front office and see how that works out for you. and so what if they care about if they will get something autographed, what do you expect them to do to help the yankees get a championship. They are fans, not people with obsessions to win

I am really sad about the Mike Mussina thing, he was doing great, and I would've loved to see him back on the mound. You will probably take his spot, or keep your own.

Welcome back Phil! Followed you in the AFL. Nice work out there. Hope that carries over to the regular season. Enjoy some time off with friends and family during the holidays. Before you know it, pitchers and catchers will be reporting.

As for your request for contest ideas and prizes - I liked the contest where you chose winners at random or had Yankee trivia. As for prizes - Honestly anything is great. You can't go wrong with autographed items, memoribilia or tickets.

AS FOR EVERYONE ELSE - LEAVE THE NEGATIVITY AT THE DOOR. Phil's blog is not a place to have intense debates like te ones that have taken place in this thread. There are other forums for that. If you want a debate - Go there. Appreciate the fact that Phil is taking the time to connect with the fans. Let's not have a few folks ruin it for the rest of us.

OK.. whats the address?.. Because all this sugar coated candy is giving me a cavity... And i do appreciate Phil taking the time to listen and read.. Perhaps Phil would really like to know from a fan why being a Yankee means something other than giving out free merchandise?..At least i am not interested in getting something that hangs on my wall except a pennant that says NYY 2009 World Series Champions which I would gladly buy and not ask for.

  This is a positive site, a place where fans can interact with a player. Not many players have these kinds of blogs for interaction., and it's a pretty cool thing. It's not all about the contests and gifts. All that is just a bonus that Phil is generous enough to do for the fans. I don't think people are sucking up to win prizes , I just think that their way of supporting the team is supporting its players, and looking forward with optimism instead of back in bitterness.

  If this is just too "sweet" for you then stop complaining and leave. Simple as that. If you aren't interested in bonus prizes, then don't enter a contest. This blog is meant to be a light-hearted place for us to have a good time and connect with a tremendous pitcher outside the world of baseball and get to know him in another light.
  
  I am certain that Phil has a pretty good idea what being a Yankee fan means considering that he plays for them. He knows how important this is to us and how bad we want a ring. He doesn't need you to remind him.

This offseason is bull, so so boring, can you call sabathia and tell him to accept already!!!?? once the big dog is out of the way, everything else will start to pick up....hopefullly......other then that, I do have a question for you phil.... do you listen to WFAN , or watch yankees hot stove, or any of these "yankee" or "mlb" oriented shows? if so, do you have an opinion on what theyre saying? like (doubtfully) the idea of manny and/or Texieria?/ Do you hate when they keep throwing your name under the trade bus?? like "we could get nate mcclouth for hughes jackson?.(btw I am Team Hughes all the way.. rooting for your breakout season!!)

Sweet glad you are back and enjoyed your stint in the Arizona fall league! From what I read it sounded like you were pretty successful. Heard you fastball was mid-90's consistently, glad everything is coming together can't wait till spring training now so you can win your spot back in the rotation!
For give away's I was thinking:
Auto- baseballs
Any #34 jersey's you have left (It's been almost impossible to find one, even though you're back to 65)
Hats, even minor league of fall league ones. That would be really cool!
Phil Hughes and Dwight Shrute bobblehead's, haha! I would put both on my shelf

Phil is 22 with loads of potential. Let him develop and learn the game. Do some research into how many of the great pitchers in baseball started out their careers.

You should have a contest for something from Yankee Stadium! That would be so cool!!!! Or a team-signed thing, that would be cool too, or like a game used shirt!!!! That would be the best! Or just like a baseball or something, anything really! And I forget who said the stuff about the pictures of the day, but I second that.

Hey Phil, I'm glad you got some more innings in for 2008. The Yankees need you for 160 innings or so in 2009 so I think we are all glad that 1) you got those innings in & 2) you did pretty well while out there.

Instead of a contest, how about either answering the fan mail that you promised to do last spring training OR send those items back. I only sent a nothing baseball card but I'm hearing about kids sending jerseys, baseballs and items signed by other players because you said you'd sign them too.. That's not cool, Phil.

The fact you do this is amazing, I have been a big fan and been followin you since I got you 2004 Donruss Elite auto! I have only added to since then! Anything you put up would be terriffic, I know you have a very busy schedule and I am sure enjoy personal time so thank you for really taking the time to connect with fans as a lot of poeple in your position don't! I can't wait to watch you pitch when you visit Baltimore!
