Contest Winner!
First off I want to thank everyone for their participation. I think the first contest went really well. There were a total of 267 email entries. The winner of our first contest in Sandi. Way to go! You will be emailed with further instructions. There were only a handful of people who got all three questions right. The number i wore in high school was 45. My current glove size is 12.5?inches. And lastly my hat size is 7 3/4....yea, no joke. Again, thanks for everyone who submitted entries and congrats to the winner. Make sure to check back often as I will probably post another contest before I head back to Florida next week. Have a great weekend!

Good Job Sandi!
You deserved to win(:
Cant wait for the next contest.
I hope to actually enter it this time.
Haha. -
good contest. Which were the answers that were found online??
-
Congratualation Sandi. Another great contest Phil, however you should look into changing your Wikipedia page because it states that you wore #34 in high school - "For the first half of the 2008 season, Hughes switched to number 34, a number he wore in high school and for the 2006 All-Star Futures Game. "
-
Wow-it must have taken a while to sort through all those entries! congrats to the winner=) Hope you'll do another contest soon!
-
AWESOME! same hat size!!!! that means i definately have to get in earlier to the next contest! (also it prove sthat my brother's accusation that i have a big head is falsified)
-
I know you could find my glove size online. I'm also pretty sure you could find what number I wore in high school as well. Not sure why wikipedia said 34. I think the hat size was pretty much a guess for everyone.
-
I got the hat size from a contact at Trenton Thunder, but that was the only thing I got right.
Thanks Phil and congrats to Sandy -
I used a picture and scaled the circumference of the ball in the pic and then made a ratio of it to your head and got like 24 inches or something and divided by 3.1415926535897932384626433832795028841971 and got 7 3/4. So i didn't guess but when i looked at you scouting report video from the 04 draft it had 44 on the back of you jersey.
-
Well I didn't do too bad for a last minute guess. I knew 45, though. I don't know why I said 34. Dummy!
Thanks for the contest, Phil! -
you can wear 45 again this season now since it's not in retirement anymore after... 4 years! haha jk :D
-
Phil your a member of the Big Headed Brotherhood haha...I wear a 7 3/4 too, an 8 if I let me hair grow a bit.
-
I couldn't find the glove size anywhere and I was originally going to guess 12.5 inches, but changed my mind at the last minute after finding a website listing the 'normal' range of glove sizes by position and I was too big. I too found the Wikipedia listing of your high school number as being 34. I did luck out though on the hat size, as I found a picture on the web of a hat you had autographed for someone on the bottom of the hat brim. In the picture was the hat tag and, once I clicked onto the larger image, you could barely make out the size of 7 3/4. I feel pretty good getting that one!
-
Hahah i feel stupid. i got none right :(
there's always next time. congrats sandi!
and thanks again phil! -
haha. I also got none right.
Congrats Sandi! Thanks for the contest, Phil. :) -
As the winner of the contest, I would like to say that I am shocked! I live in Tustin, where Phil grew up as a kid, and watched him as he played in high school. A quick side-note, call me Hudson, not Sandi (Sandi is my mom's name. :)
-
Congrats to Hudson then (not Sandi)! I was surprised I missed the HS #, as Phil was wearing #44 in the MLB.com scouting video I saw for the 2004 MLB Draft. I guess you changed your number, Phil, or perhaps the video was from another season? Oh well, you're definitely right about the hat size...a total guess for that one.
-
I could be totally wrong on this, but from the pics I've seen, I think his warmup / practice jersey was # 44 and his official game jerseys were # 45...maybe b/c he changed his # at some point? I don't know. He's listed on his official HS roster as 45 though. The scouting video almost looks like an intersquad game or something b/c the players on the "other team" aren't even wearing jerseys with numbers on the back.
-
Yea my warmup jersey had #44 on it. But I always wore #45 in games. We almost never even wore those black BP jerseys. I forgot the scouting video was filmed in a pre season game when we were wearing them.
-
Well, I guess that mystery is solved then. Oh well, I enjoyed the challenge of trying to figure out all the questions. Thanks for the clarification though! I look forward to the next contest!
-
congrats hudson! (sandi)
phil great contests. i cannot wait for the next one! -
Congrats Sandi
-
OK Phil, now that you have unloaded your sweaty fall league hat, time to get down to the business of having a killer season. You gonna win the last slot behind Wang, Sabathia, Burnett and Chamberlain? Remember the Yankees are still talking to Pettite, Be cool and GO YANKEES!!!!!

At least Giambi took his medicine like a man. Clemens, Palmiero, Sosa and McGwire just to name a few were cowards about the whole thing. Geez, get over Giambi already.
-
damm you wiki. that was the only thing i got wrong, the high school number :(
-
Didn't get any right but still happy that phil's doing contests like this.
Just found out my sister is pregnant, can't wait to buy that kid a baby hughes jersey!! Hope they make them. -
i got the number of a jersey phil was wearing while running the bases, but i couldn't find the sizes, where did you guys get it from?
-
Enjoy the warm weather! It's under 30 in NY
-
Geeeeez......I really blew this one!! the glove size on Rawlings website is wrong????
-
7 3/4? That's not a hat ... that's a salad bowl! :)
-
Congrats Hudson!
-
Congrats contest winner!!! I put his high school number was 58 but i think that was his junior year number lol oh well....all 3 difficult questions, excellent contest Phil!!
-
Don't worry Phil I'll be joining you in the abnormally large hat department soon enough. I just gave away my size 7 1/2 Yankees hat because I couldn't squeeze it over my fat head anymore.
7 5/8 here I come. 7 3/4 can't be too far off.
-
Your uncle said you wore "Charlie Brown" size hat =) lol
-
Congrats Sandi. I got the high school number on line and used the sizes for the hat and glove that I got in an auction when you were with the Trenton Thunder. The hat size was 7 7/8 and the glove size was 12 1/4. Oh well it was a fun contest. Thanks Phil
-
Haha, I wear a 7 5/8 so I'm not too far behind. Rawlings has your glove size at 12 1/4 on their site.
-
HEY PHIL!! Are you watching the 1 hour episode of the office tonight?
-
Hey Phil --
With spring training coming up, do you think you're going to have time to catch up on all of the autograph requests that were sent last spring training? I know you got a lot as I remember the picture. Just optimistic.
Thanks -
haha this is ironic. I actually got both the hat size and glove size right(same size hat as me, that was just a shot in the dark :)), but missed on his high school number, which I could've probably easily looked up... Should've done research instead of guessing probably.
-
How excited are you to officially report to Spring Training tomorrow? I'm excited for you Phil. It's the most wonderful time of the year for baseball fans!
-
Do you have a Valentine?
Have fun in Spring Training!!
